EURECOM Presented 6G-VERSUS Research on Energy-Efficient 5G RedCap at ICT 2026

6G-VERSUS partner EURECOM contributed to the International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT 2026), held on 20–22 May 2026 in Thessaloniki, Greece, presenting research focused on the energy efficiency of 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) devices.

During the the Session TS3: Network Modelling, Analysis, and Measurement , Sofiane Messaoudi (EURECOM) presented the paper “5G RedCap vs FullCap UEs: Energy Insights,” co-authored with Adlen Ksentini (EURECOM).

The work investigates the energy behaviour of 5G RedCap and Full-Capability (FullCap) User Equipment (UEs) in a real 5G Standalone deployment based on OpenAirInterface. The study addresses an important challenge for large-scale IoT deployments: maintaining reliable 5G connectivity while reducing device complexity and energy consumption.

As part of the research, the EURECOM team conducted extensive measurement campaigns under different traffic and radio configurations, collecting and analysing real-time power consumption data through the Energy Measurement and Analysis Platform (EMAP). The experimental evaluation demonstrated the strong potential of RedCap devices to significantly reduce energy consumption compared with FullCap devices while maintaining reliable connectivity.

The work provides valuable experimental insights into the role that RedCap technologies can play in supporting energy-efficient IoT deployments and more sustainable Beyond-5G and 6G infrastructures, closely aligning with the sustainability-driven objectives of the 6G-VERSUS project.
