On the 1st of July 2026, 6G-VERSUS was represented at IEEE NetSoft 2026 through a research contribution presented by Daniel Corujo from Instituto de Telecomunicações.
The work was presented during SPS #3 – Programmable Network Services and Specialized Infrastructures
This paper presents and validates two carbon-aware orchestration mechanisms built into ETSI’s Open Source MANO (OSM) platform:
🔹Service Throttling (using Virtual Energy-Aware States to allow services to switch between high-performance/energy-saving modes).
🔹Spatial-shifting (allowing services to be automatically instantiated in the infrastructure configuration that has the lowest carbon footprint).
Within the scope of 6G-VERSUS, these mechanisms were validated on a maritime port Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) pipeline. The validation showcased a 47.3% reduction in daily operational carbon emissions, without breaking service requirements.
The work provides a concrete step towards sustainable, carbon-aware B5G/6G network orchestration for real-world vertical industries, directly contributing to the sustainability objectives addressed by 6G-VERSUS.
